I graduated from NSCAD in 2011 and am a pretty avid gamer, with what I would like to consider a modicum of taste for style and execution in game design and 'fine art'. I learned at NSCAD that art in the conventional form can be a total piece of shit, and more often than not it is! Painting? Disgusting! Most of what I saw in school and the galleries was abstract garbage that had no legs to stand on outside of the usual art school critique bullshit, talking up your work and reaching for a meaning to justify the lack of talent. Video games? Abstract intellectual art school bullshit doesn't cut the mustard - they have to look nice and be functional at the same time - something most of the art I've seen to date doesn't manage to do. And the Art Vs Craft bullshit? That argument is a dead hierarchy that should have been abandoned long ago. Why is slapping oil on a canvas somehow holier than lathing a piece of wood to perfection or throwing the perfect ceramic mug? It just doesn't add up. Sorry old school art world capitalist fuckery, your days are are going the way of the dodo.
