What a great, and fun, bit of sleuthing!
These kinds of opportunists abound, unfortunately. What is amazing to me, regardless of the intent underneath it all, is that the guy has the lack of common sense to manage the thing, scam or not.
Really, kinda reminds me of the fake news graphics on the web....
    oh...
    wait...

    Great post Tara Thorne.
As both a venue owner and as a musician it is truly a corundum.
Our wee house concert space (the only legal one I know of in HFX) has ~$2200 in insurance plus heat, water (on a well) and other expenses. Doing a few concerts each season means it will be a money losing proposition for a while. Once people get here, they love it and maybe we can weather the storm but it is a tough one.
You're spot on about community and that's why we keep inviting folks in for alternative uses: workshops, video, lessons... whatever. Maybe folks will spread the word and support it.

And Halifax/NS... Ya, it's a tad parochial here for sure. But it's not far off from other places I've lived. People do need to get their heads out of their butts and work together. Talk to each other. Create opportunities within the local area. And know that if more people come to our space and hear live music, see a play or whatever then maybe they will be inspired to go to YOUR show and get something live.
I'm on a mission to promote our shows but also want to promote others works too. If someone gets the bug for live shows, then they will end up here at Roca House or at one of our Campbell + Green gigs eventually....
