The photo of the Khyber Building's historical timeline, as displayed in the first floor corridor after it was renovated in the late 90s, should credit Helen Yeomans, a local artist who did the archival research, reproduction, and installation ca. 2002. I believe that work was funded by the NS Arts Council as it then existed.

    Re: “My fellow cyclists
Here's the skinny. The law is permissive regarding cyclists passing on the right with discretion, but it is illegal for a motorist to do so. The 1-metre rule applies exclusively to motorized vehicles passing on the left. As for facts on the ground, cars are 185 - 200 cm wide; bicycles with even a large rider will be no more than 60 cm shoulder to shoulder, and that would be no more than 30 cm on either side of their wheels. And that would be on the wide side for handlebar dimensions (road bike: typically 38 - 44 cm wide). A skilled cyclist can easily go nearer to the curb and make their effective width on the road, even narrower. I've been doing this for decades: if you can't ride through a 60 cm gap, keep practicing. Curbside, that's more like 40 cm. I don't ding mirrors. That's rude, sorry to hear you got clipped. OTOH a cyclist passing a line of idling cars is easing road congestion.

Just about the best thing I've seen in this town, ever. Well over 10,000 I'd say more like 12,000+ in attendance. Been arguing with climate denial Nazis for years here on the webs, this was WAY more important. For that matter, thanks for standing up for MY kids too, even if they couldn't be there.

Well, there's the good old, bad old, "Tu Fucking Quoque" rhetorical fallacy heading its rear again. Yikes. Of course the late great Aretha Louise Franklin provided an erudite if somewhat repetitive deconstruction of this pitfall in word-salad artistry ca. 1985 with her memorable hit single "Who's Zoomin' Who?" Though nobody can begrudge the guts and glory of her vocalisations in singing it.

Thanks James, I'd never considered the use of finger-wagging as an alternative energy source until I read your comment.

That is overstated. The tree thinning takes place in 10.63 hectares, of PPP's total 75 hectares. Good forestry and conservation practices at work here. The fire risk is not different from the previously thicker growth, and removing the fallen vegetation would dry the exposed forest floor more than letting it all rot into a better moisture trap (aka soil), which also encourages other native growth in mosses and ferns etc.

To be sure, the Hollis St bike lane is great if you want to ride down to the South End. For many cyclists taking that route, the intention is to go uphill, for instance on Prince Street, to get up to Barrington on up. So they take the right lane, as is only reasonable, and within their rights as road users. Bike lanes are not meant to be mandatory. Really the problem with the Hollis St bike lane, is that it is on a one way street to begin with, while cyclists, like motorists, need to make a turn off on either side sooner or later.
