A Beautiful View

When: Oct. 13-31 2009

A Beautiful View is perfectly named. Daniel MacIvor’s funny and insightful play affords a series of glimpses into the intertwining lives of Liz (Jackie Torrens) and Mandy (Kathryn MacLellan)---views that are both bird’s eye and telescopic. The play starts near the end of the pair’s 20-year relationship, and flashes back and forth through time from their first meetings to an almost accidental sexual encounter to the ups and downs of their long-term friendship. The dialogue is both spot-on believable (what couple can’t identify with the way they often finish other’s sentences?) and incredibly poetic. Torrens is winning as the self-deprecating Liz, establishing her rapport with the audience in her first, silent minutes on stage. MacLellan’s chatty, nervous Mandy is the perfect foil for Liz, and their chemistry is undeniable. The play's ending is surprising and disturbing, but makes sense from a certain point of view. –Kate Watson
