If I've learned anything from our present mayor it is that with political fashion, comes caution. Hesitant outfits and safe suits define our mayor's wardrobe and maybe it's just me, but I'm bored. Suits, polished shoes and ties are de rigeur in the business world---they matter and I love them. But I wonder why politicians ape that fashion and shy away from the easiest way for the public to get to know them---through their own personal style.
What you wear allows you to communicate with everyone around you without saying a word. Any politician could undoubtedly use this to their advantage. Worn denim shirts, favourite baseball caps and too-expensive-but-you-bought-them-anyway shoes are pieces that are going to allow me to take an interest in you, pieces that will make me want to know more about you. I can't relate to a mayor who is afraid to colour outside of the suit. How can I express my hopes and dreams for my city to someone who can't express themselves in the most basic of ways?
A mayor needs all the classics. Not dry, boring suits on a weekly rotation. If you're going to dress conservatively, do so with conviction! Mayor, choose a get up that makes you excited, a piece people will be talking about and most importantly a piece you love. Along with dressing with conviction and feeling great about what you have on comes a sense of confidence. This confidence is understated when present, but very obvious when not.

Take Janice . I stopped her because Janice looks like she can work a room as well as she's working that fur hat. That hat speaks to me about Janice's adventurous side, it tells me she is not afraid to try something new. It's far from conservative but it's also very personal. I'm getting to know a little bit about Janice just by looking at what she's got on and that hat alone says a whole lot more than anything anyone presently in City Hall has worn. "I relate more to someone who shows a bit of themselves through their style; it makes them all the more real and relatable," says Janice, a Dartmouth artist. Conservative dress is not limited to suit and tie and our mayor and other leaders would benefit in embracing this fact.

People connect on the most basic of levels and for a politician; dressing with style is the ticket in. Dame (above) and I bonded over our shared political opinions as well as his pageboy cap and sweater vest. When I saw Glenn (below) in that worn corduroy coat that screamed 'I'm loved!' I knew there was a story behind the jacket and I was right. I was warmed by the way memories spread themselves across Glenn's smile as he spoke about the year he travelled around Europe after he graduated from high school and blew his budget on this corduroy jacket he just had to have.

So, future mayor, wear your favourite plaid or those out-there shoes you couldn't resist. Bring out those thick-rimmed glasses and frayed leather jackets. Let us get to know you on a more personal level and we'll love you all the more for it. Hell, I might even blog about you!
