When: Tue., Sept. 5, 7 p.m. 2017
Celebrate pioneer folklorist Helen Creighton's birthday in her namesake space (yeah, that's the Helen Creighton Room at the Alderney Gate Library) while watching the biopic of her life. As the National Film Board puts it, "Creighton helped define Maritime culture: Thanks to her, folk songs moved out of the kitchens and the fishing boats into the main stream. The film is a moving tribute to the genius of a self-taught folklorist. But, is also raises important questions. Does Creighton’s collection truly reflect Maritime culture, or is it tinged by her own upper-midde-class assumptions?” Pass the popcorn!
