A Year with Frog and Toad

Neptune Theatre's annual holiday musical is a Halifax Christmas season tradition. And unlike some traditions, this one tends to be entertaining. Here's Coast theatre critic Kate Waton's glowing review of A Year with Frog and Toad, 2015's holiday offering:

A Year with Frog and Toad is a delightful family musical that follows two amphibious BFFs through four seasons. Together, the irascible Toad (Shane Carty) and the sweetly sincere Frog (Justin Goodhand) enjoy gentle adventures and explore what it means to be a true friend. And although this Year may be light on plot, but it’s high on charm.

The show is filled with jazzy, snazzy tunes and fun dance numbers including soft-shoe, tap dance and a giggle-inducing interpretive dance by Toad. The humour is accessible to all ages. I especially liked the running gag of the “speedy” Snail (Mark Allan), who appears periodically throughout the year en route to delivering a single letter.

The Neptune production is a visual feast, with Geofrey Dinwiddie’s story-book sets, Johnny Cann’s colourful projections and Bonnie Deakin’s clever costume design that evokes each animal’s species rather than literally translating it. There’s a simplicity and timelessness to this show that makes it a perfect introduction to theatre for kids, but also appeals to a sense of nostalgia in adults. After all, who doesn’t want to be a child again around the holidays?
