Affirming the art of all ages

The colourful catharsis of The Affirmations Colouring Book

Colouring books aren't just for kids anymore, except when they are, or except when they're a tool to bridge a gap between adult and youth spheres. Montreal-based, Wolfville-raised artist, musician and educator Sarah Mangle aims to do this with her book, The Affirmations Colouring Book, released last year, which has resonated with an audience of kids, adults, therapists, divorce lawyers and shelter and prison staff.

While colouring books for grownups have been enjoying a renaissance in the past year or so, Mangle hadn't heard of this when she began drawing the book almost two years ago while laid up with a broken leg. She started drawing from "pictures of people's pets off Facebook," bearing messages like "Take breaks" and "It's okay to have worries."

Slowly, the vision came together for a 100-page book: a longtime zinester, Mangle self-published the colouring book last October.

Since last year, the book has already undergone several printings, been covered in national press, and used in workshops at women's shelters and prisons. Mangle is currently working on the follow-up, The All- Ages Colouring Book of Worries and Reassurances. At the launch, Mangle's work will be accompanied by an exhibition and sale of work by children: currently, six artists between four and eight years old are set to exhibit work in media from pottery to painting.

"People don't take kids' work seriously," Mangle says. "When I was a kid, I called myself an artist, and I felt like I had to wait until I was old enough to be taken seriously. So I wanted to have a platform for kids to sell their work."
