Looking for a dentist? The Apollo Dental Centre (172 Wyse Road, Dartmouth, in the Blockbuster complex) is looking for patients. Maybe y’all can work something out. The centre opened in December and is tricked out with state-of-the-art digital radiography machines---which emit about one seventh of the radiation that an old-school X-ray machine gives off, according to Ghousia Ashraf, Apollo’s resident dentist. Digital X-rays are also useful: Via computer, it’s possible to magnify and rotate the images, giving dentists a more accurate picture of all the mysteries contained in our crazy mouths. Ashraf is a Dalhousie dentistry graduate who’s spent the last few years practising in Vancouver. She got into the tooth business for one simple reason: “I like restoring people’s smiles,” she says. In addition to the standard cleanings, fillings and drillings, Ashraf also specializes in cosmetic dentistry, so the practice offers a number of nifty smile-enhancers, including Zoom! Whitening (the procedure used on Extreme Makeover), and the application of “contact-lens-thin” veneers called Lumineers. Apollo’s also open Saturdays and is set up for electronic insurance-claim submission---which means lucky insurance-havers pay less up front, leaving them more to bet on the ponies with. (Do people still bet on ponies?) Call Apollo at 446-7070 or check the website at apollodental.ca.
