Fiction often pales in comparison to a true story. And take a true story (the six American diplomats trapped in Tehran in 1979 during the Iran War) and add a heavy dose of heroism, as Ben Affleck does in Argo, his third directorial venture, and you get quality Hollywood entertainment. Tony Mendez (Affleck) schemes to free the Americans by creating a fake movie to film in Iran and sneaking them out as film crew. Affleck tells a gripping story with plenty of humour, helped along by Alan Arkin as Lester Siegel and John Goodman as John Chambers, Hollywood big shots. Even if he downplays the Canadian involvement (the ambassador's house is the diplomats' safe haven), Argo is proof that Affleck is a skilled director and can produce some great entertainment. - Molly Segal
