To the editor,
When Rodney MacDonald won his leadership campaign he said he would make the environment one of his top four priorities. Yet he has allowed one of his campaign's biggest donors, Pioneer Coal, to strip-mine in Cape Breton. There is no Tory plan to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, increase efficiency or reduce pollution. There's talk of sustainability, but it is not clear whether the Conservative government understands what that term means. Even oil companies have been watering down this term to appear environmentally friendly.
Darrell Dexter has said that the provincial Conservatives cannot steal the NDP's ideas—they're available for free and they will come up with more. So I hope the MacDonald team, if voted back into power, will grab a few more pieces of the NDP policy. The NDP understands what sustainability means; hopefully MacDonald will borrow the NDP's energy, forestry, transportation, agriculture and wilderness policies as well. We need to protect the province our children will inherit. Borrow it or steal it, Mr. MacDonald—just get it done.
