One time I needed to get a last-minute birthday gift for someone and it had to be thoughtful, rare and ideally expensive. Or at least, it had to have the implied perception of expensive. Within the cramped backrooms of Plan B Merchants’ sprawling co-op on Gottingen Street, I found an antique glass table decoration...thingy. It was exquisite. It was mysterious. It was $15. Perfect. I’m not saying you should ever fool someone with a cheap gift you pass off as pricey. What I am saying, however, is that an antique’s value is more in how much it’s desired and how intriguing it is to its new owner.
