“We have a cocktail called the Cucumber Rickey,” says Best Bartender and Lot Six mixologist Shane Beehan of the gin, cucumber, lime juice and soda water concoction. “It’s a simple drink, but when we put it on the menu, suddenly we sold 1,000 a month. We realized we’d created a beast!” Beast or not, he says the Lot Six staff pays very close attention to what their customers like, want and come back for—and that’s what shapes their drink programs even more so than their personal tastes. He also gives a serious hat tip to his long time collaborator Jeff Van Horne, who while no longer with the bar, “worked tirelessly” on the award-winning cocktail menus. “This Best of award celebrates that friendship and dedication to cocktail culture in Halifax.”
