The existing Memorial Library on Spring Garden Road is endearing, but with no air conditioning, cramped quarters and a failing facade, it’s time to let the institution retire already. The new Central Library is the one worthwhile outcome of the city/provincial/federal stimulus package implemented after the financial collapse of 2009 (the antithesis of worthwhile is the Washmill Underpass, also a stimulus project). Ever since, Haligonians have been super excited watching the new structure rise across the street from the old library, and it should open for business next spring. Expect comfort, a theatre, a cafe, room to spread out and even a few books.
