The internet was supposed to have defeated books by now, but printed literature is thriving, as evidenced by your absolute dedication to Spring Garden vet Bookmark. And it’s not just you: “Tourists who would normally come on the boats and stay on the waterfront or take a bus tour to Peggys Cove—we saw a lot of those people on the street,” says manager Mike Hamm. “They weren’t just buying postcards and grocery-store titles, they were buying some good stuff.” Bookmark’s core audience has remained loyal through the many changes book-buying has weathered. “We’re undergoing renovations and one night I was staying with the workers very, very late,” says Hamm, “and a man ran up to the window and said, ’You’re not closing, are you?’ I said, ’No, we’re just becoming more beautiful.’”
