Bedridden by a case of pneumonia, Fat Apollo was nevertheless excited to hear he’d get to keep his crown as Halifax’s Best Local Character. A testament, he says, to this city’s intertwined community. “Halifax is a tiny big city where everybody knows each other,” says Apollo (AKA Mike McCluskey). “Being a local character, I think, is just being good to each other.” But please, don’t mention this year’s runner-up. “Listen, I was in the navy for 16 years and when I would see that little Tugboat—that thing makes me so angry. I can’t believe that thing was voted silver.”
