Matt Mays could just be the lead representative of a new era in the Halifax music scene—you also voted him your favourite local male, and his CD release party beat out the annual Super Friendz reunion for best show of the year. “It was good because everybody was feeling so rad,” says Mays, laughing. But seriously. “It was good because there were a lot of people there showing their support and the Torpedo was launched successfully.” That would be El Torpedo, Mays’s band. Also launched successfully that night was Mays’s highly anticipated solo record, which the tight-as-hell band played in full for the first set. The Torpedo has continued its trajectory in the past few months, with Mays headlining every bar in town to full, appreciative (and, admittedly, swooning) audiences. Why even try to get out of the way?
