The Five Fishermen has endured the test of time, remaining a popular choice for nearly 40 years when so many other establishments have flipped or folded. “We’ve survived and that’s the most special part,” says the restaurant’s assistant manager and sommelier Avery Gavel. Here, the seafood is locally sourced and as fresh as possible allowing the chefs to showcase the natural tastes without masking them in sauces. Gavel boasts that the restaurant’s incredibly popular mussel bar goes through over 100 pounds of mussels daily, that’s how good they are—a stat that’s not surprising coming from Halifax’s seafood heavyweight.
