Billy Corgan
The Future Embrace
(Warner)
Billy Corgan is no stranger to the spotlight, as frontman for The Smashing Pumpkins and then later as the outspoken leader of Zwan. Corgan has always managed to push the envelope (ambitious two-disc albums, the Pumpkins’ Machina, Zwan) but The Future Embrace might be the end of all of that. Prior to its release, Corgan declared his intention to attempt to reconcile and reform the Smashing Pumpkins, effectively casting a long, dark shadow over his pretty solo debut. The Future Embrace isn’t far removed from the more accessible “1979” or “Tonight, Tonight” sound of the Pumpkins, but it lacks the urgency needed to propel Corgan into the solo stratosphere of the Claptons or Bowies of this world.
