Birthday beers with B.A. Johnston

Loads of live music and cheezies make for a mighty fine weekend.

It's that time of the year when we're all reminded how shitty our birthday parties are compared to B.A. Johnston's annual celebratory, weekend-long brouhaha. If you aren't drawn in on the promise of an endless cheezie bar alone (like some of us) perhaps the following lineups will entice you. Bad Vibrations, Quaker Parents, Old & Weird, Adam Mowery plus the birthday man himself make Friday an unmissable party. And part two on Saturday sees Quivers, Outtacontroller, The Sensibles, more B.A. and a speaking engagement with the ever-wise Mark Black. John Cusack's teenage angst rounds out the three-day extravaganza when the lights go down at Gus' and B.A. shows '80s fave Better Off Dead (at 8:30pm). It's kind of like he's giving gifts on his birthday instead of receiving them so party guests, here's a hot tip from B.A.: "I have been waiting for someone to give me an Intellivision since 1979."

Fri Jan 20/Sat Jan 21, Gus' Pub, 2605 Agricola Street, $3 before 10pm/$7
