Boardwalk Artists

Cruise the free ferry over to Dartmouth for the Boardwalk Artists festival at Alderney Landing on Canada Day, where local artists and artisans will be selling their work, along with a slate of activities that should engage visitors of any ages. The event celebrates a couple of anniversaries, including Wilfred Laurier’s 175th birthday and the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Canada—women in Manitoba were the first to vote that year. Artist Maria Doering will help visitors print commemorative cards to note this anniversary at a printmaking station, while Claudia Legg will lead a quilting circle where people can add important women in their own lives to a quilt. If you’re looking for something messier, try working on a sculpture of Canadian wildlife or painting with paint-filled water balloons. (We’d suggest wearing your oldest, rattiest red-and-white clothes.) —Laura Kenins
