Hit the Floor
Breakestra turned heads by taking the breaks — repetitious, rhythmic detours that arise midway through classic funk, acid jazz, soul or R&B songs — and stretching them into long live jams. But on Hit the Floor the 10-piece group from LA offers up their own original break-based tracks. Fans of Grand Theft Bus, Servo and Jimmy Swift Band and hip- hop devotees will find common ground on this record. Heads will nod to tracks like “Family Rap” with guest rhymes by the unmistakable baritone of Jurassic Five rapper Chali 2Na, while jam fans will love the classic, early ’70s Santana sound — that is not a swipe —or the spacey vibe of “How do you really feel?” All the way “from the City of Angels to your town,” welcome Breakestra!
