Rated R (MPAA) 125 min. 2011

The movie starts with a bang: down-on-her-luck Annie (Kristen Wiig) and her handsome fuck-buddy (Jon Hamm) are going at it like rabbits---Wiig’s exasperated expressions and flailing limbs will make you laugh so hard you cry. This sets the tone for a hilarious trip down the aisle as Annie attempts to fulfill her Maid of Honour duties for her childhood friend Lillian (Maya Rudolph) amidst a battalion of bridesmaids---a “stone-cold pack of weirdos”--- including ferociously competitive Helen (Rose Byrne). Wiig’s talent extends beyond the script she co-wrote with Annie Mumolo and onto the screen, which she eats up with her vulgarity, dry wit and slapstick timing. Bridesmaids reverses the comedy status-quo: finally, libidinous and flatulent women get screen time, their characters well-written and engaging, while men sit in the bleachers (except Annie’s crush, an adorable cop played by Chris O’Dowd).–Molly Segal
