This Jason Priestley comedy about an inveterate douchebag used-car dealer Dick Fitz feels like the natural conclusion of the American sitcom. With all the language and morality rules lifted on this New Minas, Nova Scotia-shot series, it takes characters spouting the most outrageous language and offers up their bad behavior and family animus as entertainment. Its first-season bumps are evident: it goes limp during an all-out farce episode where Fitz tries to shoot a porno, and the magic realism in the character of Larry, Fitz's conscience made flesh, never really makes any sense. But Call Me Fitz is compulsively watchable none the less, largely due to a dynamite female supporting cast, including story-editor-turned-cast-member Tracy Dawson, Kathleen Munroe, Brooke Nevin and the amazing Joanna Cassidy. And in Richard Fitzpatrick, Priestley has found a character to erase all memories of 90210‘s Brandon Walsh. It’s hard to imagine Brandon growing up to become a 40-year-old, Dean Martin-worshiping, drug-taking skeeze. Or catching syphilis.
