Carbon Arc presents Take Shelter

When: Wed., March 28, 7 p.m. 2012

Writer-director Jeff Nichols binds environmental, pharmaceutical and apocalyptic dread in a perfect union. Take Shelter is about a rural Ohio family where the husband, Curtis (Michael Shannon), starts to see visions that portend either a Biblical end-of-times or the onset of a mental illness that runs in his family. It's a lose-lose situation; the suspense comes from trying to predict the real nature of the storm on the horizon. Shannon---Oscar-nominated for his part in Revolutionary Road---walks a razor, making Curtis a character both sympathetic and frighteningly unhinged, and 2011's star-going-nova Jessica Chastain as wife Samantha matches him step for step. Dancing between an everyday sort of horror and the potentially supernatural, this is the kind of movie we wish M. Night Shyamalan still made. –Carsten Knox
