On her debut The Disconnection, Carina Round is heavy petting with being good, but never goes all the way. It ranges in sound from Holly McNarland’s great early work to recent PJ Harvey, but it never feels like the commitment was offered to make these songs more than just mock-ups. The dark wailing of standout track “Into My Blood” provides contrast to this feeling. In it, Round shows she has more to offer than being just a safe bet at a Patti Smith karaoke competition. Maybe next time.
