A city and filmmaker haven’t been so perfectly paired since Woody and Manhattan: Atom Egoyan once again takes a look at the repressed lives of Torontonians. Egoyan revisits Exotica territory, this time in a moody thriller adapted from the 2003 French film Nathalie, where the juice is in the character moments. Gynecologist Catherine (Julianne Moore) suspects husband David (Liam Neeson) of indiscretions and hires professional escort Chloe (Amanda Seyfried) to test his fidelity. It’s in the unexpected connection between the women where the story finds heat, and as it does, a very recognizable Toronto offers a perfect backdrop; cosmopolitan, sensual and remote. The conclusion is a little disappointing, a diversion from sexy and sophisticated to a fatal attraction, but Moore and Seyfried bring class and depth.
