Chronos' latest invitation to the dancefloor is upbeat, soulful and bursting with brass.
The eight-piece instrumental ensemble brings a fuller, more luscious sound in its sophomore album, What It Is. Chronos' 2013 debut, Boots the Cat, earned nominations for Jazz Album of the Year from both Music Nova Scotia and the East Coast Music Awards.
"It's instrumental groove," says bass player Rheo Rochon, who says a more danceable sound evolved naturally in the four years since the band's first album. "Getting people to dance is our goal," says Rochon, who founded the group in 2012. "We gear our show toward the party vibe."
On What It Is, Chronos' horn section–trumpet, trombone and saxophone–tie together accompanying drums, congas, bass, guitar and keys. Despite its size, in the four years since recording its original album, the band only lost one percussionist who moved away, and swapped in a different trombone player. Rochon attributes the bigger sound to all eight members of Chronos pitching in with writing the new LP, recorded at The Shed in Shad Bay.
Rochon says the four-year gap between albums was because of a lengthy post-production process. He promises the wait for the band's third album won't be as long–it's already half-written.
Chronos is launching What It Is with a Maritime tour, performing March 24 at Bearly's, March 25 at Crabbe Mountain Reggaefest in New Brunswick, April 1 in Charlottetown and April 2 in Moncton.
