Cigar Box Banjo: Notes on Music and Life

Paul Quarrington (GreyStone)

Paul Quarrington passed away in January of this year. He’d already been working on a book about his life in music when he was diagnosed with advanced, terminal lung cancer. This became his “new thematic material” for a book that became about his life, as seen and heard through music. The novelist, who won the Governor-General Award for Fiction for Whale Music, screenwriter (film and TV) and non-fiction writer (Fishing with My Old Guy) focuses on his subject (music) without wavering, even though death’s waving at him through the peephole. He writes an unabashed, unsentimental and beautiful treatise on how a life spent dabbling, experimenting is still a life spent in study and devotion, a life well lived.
