A writer’s craft is always evolving---even for an author who has penned over 50 books. Ten years after publishing Cold Clear Morning, Lesley Choyce re-immersed himself into the manuscript to release a new revised edition. “It was a series of setbacks in my own life that suggested there may be more to Taylor’s story,” said Choyce of his novel’s leading character. The tale depicts Taylor Colby’s return to Nickerson Harbour, NS, after a prosperous guitar spree in California, to begin healing from the loss of his soulmate. His road to restoration is rocky---interrupted, or perhaps facilitated, by seal rescues, dealings with an inner city teen and a peculiar reunion with his long lost mother. Many of Choyce’s scenes powerfully remain in the reader’s mind like that of a novice determined to stay up on his surfboard or a drive down a discontinued LA highway. After a decade, Choyce has reawakened the potential for hope in Taylor’s life; maybe he is inviting us to do the same.
