Corb Lund

Counterfeit Blues (New West)

With his band, the Hurtin' Albertans, Lund has landed on a prestigious US label. The foursome recorded a dozen of Lund's finest songs at Sun Studios in Memphis with some extra rockin' noise live off the floor. Since Lund began in a punk band, The Smalls, it's not really a stretch. Lead guitarist Grant Siemens inserts the odd Scotty Moore riff from the Elvis Presley sessions in the same room 60 years ago, as if poked by a ghost. The main attraction is still Lund's rich depiction of western life, its characters and shrinking wilderness. These themes are also relevant to American listeners. If this album lures Stateside ears closer, Nashville's there for the taking.
