After the 86 new infections reported yesterday by the province, the first daily report under 100 in more than two weeks, we were definitely hoping the trend would continue today and the number would keep dropping. Unfortunately those hopes proved futile, because the province is reporting 126 new cases on Sunday.
"There are 106 cases in Central Zone, nine in Eastern Zone, nine in Western Zone and two in Northern Zone," says Nova Scotia's daily COVID-19 report. Central had been below 100 cases per day since reporting 116 cases on Wednesday: there were 83 new cases Thursday, 97 on Friday and 66 yesterday. So today's return to three-digit infections is particularly unwelcome in the zone that has driven the high numbers in the province's third wave, with 2,537 new cases since April 1.
In other unwelcome news, now a tenth patient at the Infirmary has developed COVID from a non-COVID unit. "They had been discharged and are recovering at home," the province says. "The other patients in the non-COVID unit have tested negative and are being closely monitored. As a precaution, Nova Scotia Health Authority is testing staff and doctors who have worked in the unit."
Top doc Robert Strang speaks to the potential frustration today's higher number might cause, as the number of active cases rises to 1,531 after being at 1,509 yesterday. "We knew we would have some ups and downs as we worked to get this outbreak under control. We can get these numbers down if we stay the course and continue to follow all public health measures. Stay close to home and be kind to one another.”
