Cyrus

Rated R (MPAA) 92 min. 2010

The Brothers Duplass deliver a rare piece of cinematic realism about a divorced, directionless guy named John (John C. Reilly) living in LA, on the fringe of Hollywood. (You sense its presence). He begins the film down on his luck. By the end of it, his luck is changing. The film’s named after Jonah Hill’s character, a 21-year-old with an unhealthy reliance on and devotion to his mom (Marisa Tomei), whom he calls by her first name, Molly. John and Molly meet and fall in love. Hill’s got dramatic chops; he’s vulnerable and sinister at once. But Reilly and Tomei’s vulnerable, precarious exchanges make this movie. They’re ordinary people. –Sean Flinn
