When: Thu., Feb. 12, 12 p.m. 2015
The David Schroeder Music and Culture Series presents this lecture by Jerry White. This talk will take place in Room 406. White will talk about poet Seán Ó Riordáin, filmmaker Louis Marcus, composer Seán Ó Riada, and scholar Seán Ó Tuama. He has classified these individuals as the “Cork Group.” He also weaves into the discussion a poetry magazine titled Innti. During the sixties and seventies, this group tried to bring something fresh to Irish language (Gaeilge), incorporating modernism, a new take on what it meant to be European, and conceptualizing new ways of expressing their Irish nationality. White will connect aspects of each of their work and lives, such as how Marcus’ films featured scores from Ó Riada and Ó Tuama and Ó Riordáin’s involvement in Innti. His focus will be how the time period changed the Irish language into one comprised of both classic and avant-garde elements.
