You say you are dealing with people who are drunk so probably a good bet that putting up a sign is not going to make much difference in their behavior. Be it old fashioned Bowery style bums or tipsy Hipsters many drunks tend to not act overly well in some places.
If you wish to continue to work in a place frequented by such folks and your boss is not being too helpful with deterrents such as extra staff, a good set of procedures etc. then you may have grow a much thicker skin and at least hit said boss up for a hot line to the cop shop, a decent baseball bat for behind the counter, and a good escape route.
Or start looking for another job. Meanwhile, welcome to the hood - it is not all just coffee shops and hip restos. Either that or prepare to be even more tired and frustrated. All that designer beer, cider and locally made liquor that is also being sold in the area is not much different than any hooch when it affects someone's brain and how they act.
One assumes you are not volunteering to do this job for free, so therefore you get paid to do the job, and at times there will be tips in that line of work too. And that creates a bit of a Catch 22 because generally in food service pay is at the low end, and tips are supposed to help make the take home better than just the pay. And because there may be tips - pay rates stay low.
However, there usually is no guarantee of a tip at all. Unless you work for slime buckets who add a percentage to the bill for gratuities. (Places I avoid like the plague, though I am usually a tipper - depending on service).
Anyway, tips are normally not mandatory, therefore they are at the discretion of the customer and may be based on many thing. None of which are generally your business. However, if you are really interested to know why 'your magical mystique' of being an attractive young woman (your opinion, as one person's attractive may be another's meh, or ugh - also you are playing a form of sexist card there) and giving friendly and fast service (not truly friendly since you seem to have this bitch in your bonnet about the customer) is not working perhaps woman up and ask him directly. But be prepared for a direct answer.
Who knows. perhaps if you were a hot hunky dude he may open the wallet and tip big time (more sexism - oops), then again maybe not as he just may not have extra loot - or may be a person who does not believe in tipping. People from some countries are not tippers for example because tipping does not happen there etc.
Be happy he comes there and leaves any money at all in the joint - as that goes towards your pay eventually. Also, better than if he was a truly annoying person and all. And most important - if you put anything extra in his meals that should not be there, you deserve to be fired immediately and that should be just the start of a few horrors for you including perhaps a visit to a court room.
Well, you probably have a base for some lyrics for a possible C&W recording. After all the age old hit 'em while they're down schtick seems to work if you can't do one about wayward or lost love.
I am not a fan of alcoholics, in general. However, I think I'd prefer to deal with one of them rather than ever have to meet up with the OB. Talk about 'stupit' - sheesh.
Unless you are being held prisoner at that greasy dive you have the power to change your place of employment. Granted getting anew job these days is not always easy but it may be necessary for your mental health. However, from the type of job you seem to be in many other places may have the same type of employees. So you may wish to try and change up the types of job you are skilled to do over time. Again not easy, but doable.
