I used to be a proud subscriber of the Chronicle Herald because of their independent status in the face of media ownership concentration. I changed my opinion after the newsroom decimation following the closure of the News and the Heralds' increasingly adoption of Mainstream Medias' anti-union position.
Unions are the sole organization trying to protect the safety of our workplaces and our quality of life. There is a direct correlation between the declining size of the Middle Class and the falling ratio of Unionized workers as a portion of the overall workforce. A livable wage, health insurance, 40 hour work weeks, overtime, equal pay for equal work, skill certification requirements, paid vacation time, anti discrimination rules, sick leave, pregnancy leave, pensions, job protection for pregnancy, military service, disability leave, are just a few worker rights that were pioneered by Unions and every single earned right increases the employer's cost of doing business.

Slogans like 'United we Stand', 'Look for the Union label', 'in Solidarity', etc need to be taken seriously if the continual erosion of our Canadian quality of life is to stop. A quick look at countries where Canadian manufacturing jobs have been relocated, thanks to Free Trade agreements, provide us with an excellent idea of how many companies would like to operate; no environment rules, no safety rules, child labour, no health care, no retirement, workers physically worn-out before their 40th birthday, indenture to the company store, etc. More ethical companies will drop their standards with the excuse of staying competitive. Here’s hoping we or our children won't have to experience an era of Multi-national Corporation Dark Ages.

    A common sense "sniff" test.
    Left Wing Right Wing
    NDP -------- Liberal ------- Conservative
If you're a NDP Premier and your "Big" idea with its major policy change draws no criticism for the leader of the Conservative party, it's an indication that you should re-examine your "Big" idea.
If the leader of the Conservative party thinks your "Big" idea is a good idea maybe it isn't.
