All jazz musicians take their turn at Christmas standards. Some just toss them off. But the greats treat the material no differently than any jazz or American songbook standard, making it a showcase for their talent. Diana Krall has recorded a few seasonal numbers over the years , but this is her first full treatment. Here she gets back to basics — the swinging, improvisational style that’s been lost on her past few albums — turning “Let it Snow” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” into a real barn-burners. And it sounds like she’s having a lot of fun too, even letting go some unrestrained laughter on “Sleigh Ride.” The rest is usual seasonal fare — “Jingle Bells,” “Let It Snow” and “Count Your Blessings.” This is not progressive stuff, but thoroughly enjoyable.
