DJ Quik

The Book Of David (Mad Science/Fontana)

With the smooth sounds of ’90s R&B and rap coming back in style, it’s the perfect time for west coast veteran DJ Quik to make his return. His first album in six years, The Book Of David sounds as if it’s been laying dormant in a time capsule since his heyday in the mid-’90s. Full of crispy jams and plenty of cameos from oft-overlooked MCs (including two gems from Bizzy Bone), Quik reminds us that braggart gangster rap can be a lot of fun, rather than totally obnoxious or overly self-conscious. Complete with a killer hidden track and a reference to lobster pizza, this is a summertime party necessity.
