Last Saturday, Chicago DJ, producer and musical pioneer DJ Rashad was found dead in his apartment. While he never became household name or superstar DJ during his career, he was integral in taking footwork music out of Chicago’s south side, and bringing it around the globe. His most recent LP, Double Cup, was released in October to critical acclaim. It’s an album that can only exist in the 21st century. It’s a postmodern mash of heavy 808 bass, jittery-syncopated drums and smooth dreamy synths. On top of that are sounds from movies, YouTube and industrial noises---it’s unconventional, but it makes you move. RIP DJ Rashad, a true musical trailblazer.
