On October 18, after you’ve recovered from the excitement of voting in the municipal election (it feels good to make a big X), the fun is far from over. Starting at 6pm, downtown Halifax will be alive with Nocturne, the city’s first late-night arts festival. Modelled after the all-night Nuit Blanche, which takes place in major cities around the world like Toronto, Montreal, Paris, Madrid and Copenhagen, there’s a conservative Haligonian catch: our event ends at midnight. (Of course, that doesn’t mean you need to turn into a pumpkin. My guess is that the 24-hour art-party people will be organizing some unofficial festivities.) Expect to see a wide range of installations, performances and exhibitions in the most unlikely of places, plus it’s a great opportunity to visit different cultural organizations that will be staying open late that night.
It’s going to be a busy fall season in art land, as Photopolis, the city-wide festival of photography also runs from October 1 to November 15. In the meantime, why not ask those mayoral candidates exactly how they plan on supporting volunteer-run cultural events like Nocturne and Photopolis.
