Shake It Out’s monthly dance parties aren’t typical, but they are a lot of fun

An online digital dance-music mixtape means never having to rewind. You don't have to worry about flipping the cassette or recording over your jams. An online mixtape takes all the hassle out of dancing. And dancing is what DJs AA (Aaron) Wallace and Dubious (Jon Dacey) want you to do. Every month, the Halifax DJs will be releasing digital mixtapes at Shake It Out, a disco-electric-boogie night at Menz & Mollyz Bar. After a successful test-run in November, the bar invited the DJs to host Shake It Out for the year. The music and the all-night drink specials keep you moving.

Wallace, long-time DJ and member of Sleepless Nights, and Dacey, founder of Prize Records, noticed a lack of alternative dance-music venues in Halifax. They were attracted to the fun atmosphere at Menz & Mollyz. Wallace says it is a unique place to DJ and a great space to dance.

"The sound system doesn't have a focal point," he says. "The sound is all around you. And we don't play typical club music."

Describing their track selection as eclectic, Wallace and Dacey want to play something that sounds a little different. They mix tracks based on how all the songs feel together, "tempos, keys, everything," Wallace says. "It's just a real thing, people playing music that they like."

Over the next year, Wallace and Dacey will invite other live acts to play Shake It Out and collaborate with local organizations to "bring in some artists from away who we otherwise couldn't afford." They also hope to expand through the Maritimes. Named after one of Wallace's solo tracks, Shake It Out is already underway in Fredericton, and has found a second home at Menz.

"We've been working hard," says Wallace. "It's a cool scene, a cool bar and a lot of fun."

Shake It Out w/DJs AA Wallace and Dubious, Friday, February 17 at Menz & Mollyz, 2182 Gottingen, 11pm, $5/$7
