This film has kind of a tough sell and almost pulls it off. It's about a Northern Irish man (Jim Sturgess) working for the English as their snitch in the IRA. He tells them when bombs are going to go off, assassinations are going to happen, who's who and what's what. The story is a tough sell, or at least a controversial one, because in these peaceful, after-the-war days of Irish self-reliance, the IRA is more often portrayed as courageous freedom fighters than bad-guy terrorists (see 2009's Hunger as an interesting counterpoint). But the film works hard to portray both sides and to explain the situation, ultimately arguing that the ends did not justify the means. Equal parts action and political insight, the film goes too far at times with both but is a worthwhile take on an often overlooked side of The Troubles.
