Dear Liz Feltham,
Thank you so much for your recent article about what is wrong with the food industry in Halifax. I am a working cook in this city, and I could not agree more that we are severely underpaid. We are the most underpaid "Red Seal" accredited profession. When you compare our wages to another sealed profession, say a carpenter or welder, the differences are shocking and disgusting.
So why aren't we paid more? Our work environments are just as dangerous. My father is a welder, so I have great respect for the trades, but the people who I have worked with throughout my career have been cut, burnt, scraped and pulled more muscles than any other tradesperson I have ever known.
Something had to be done to right this wrong. We cooks deserve an equal trades wage as much as the next tradesperson. It is about time that the owners and patrons of this city, and the country, realized this.
