Freelove Fenner

Do Not Affect A Breezy Manner (Fixture)

I can’t help thinking of the term “caper” when I hear the new LP from Montreal’s Freelove Fenner. Not the pickled flower buds, but the kind of mischief that usually involves concealed motives, hushed breath and stealthy movements. The vocals are at once icy and impelling (recalling the late Trish Keenan of Broadcast), the guitar and bass are both bubbly yet insistent. It’s wicked smooth. The whole thing makes me want to wait until dark, lace up my favourite sneakers real tight and walk around in the shadows saying things like, “Who could resist a good chance at some badness?”
