Friends With Benefits

Rated R (MPAA) 120 min. 2011

ust when you thought Hollywood was going to break some rules and get all polyamorous, it cranks out another predictable, if R-rated, romcom. Two hotties---an “emotionally damaged” recruiter, Jamie (Mila Kunis), and “emotionally unavailable” GQ recruit, Dylan (Justin Timberlake)---become best buds who just want a li'l hanky-panky on the side, sans relationship. Complications ensue (kinda) when they start dating other people (and stop banging each other). Director Will Gluck (Easy A) tries to poke fun at the movie’s romcom-ness with a couple self-referential nods, including one to the soundtrack, designed to replace a good script. There are a few great comedic moments, many of them thanks to Dylan’s sister (Jenna Elfman), and oral sex is given screen time and treated with complete normalcy---at least that’s a step forward. –Molly Segal
