Fringe Binge 2014: Day 7

Rosemary Curry and Noella Murphy make a case for clown-love in A Distant Cousin
  • Rosemary Curry and Noella Murphy make a case for clown-love in A Distant Cousin

I have to confess. I've not only been binging on theatre, but on food and drink as well. Yes, much of the down time between shows has been spent visiting many of the fine establishments around town. Countless cups of coffee and fresh-baked cookies at Alteregos. Sparkling wine (and conversation) at Obladee. Cheese and sangria at The Agricola Street Brasserie. You get the picture.

I'm not telling you this not to make you hungry, but to point out that the Atlantic Fringe does a great service to Halifax. Yes, it feeds our collective community hunger to make and share art, but it also brings customers to our local businesses.  And that's a very good thing!

Thought, Word, and Deed  ★★½

This play is set in a town where the pastor from Footloose would seem like a libertine. The premise is that a 16-year-old girl and her 18-year-old boyfriend are caught having consensual sex by her strict older brother, who immediately decides his sister was raped. The boyfriend has issues with the sex, and spends much of the play wondering if he is indeed "wicked". The language and relationships of the teens simply do not ring true, and the metaphor of a chess game, which is layered over the "action", seems to come completely from left field. Puzzling.

A Distant Cousin of TedTalks: Clowns Demystified

A cute premise that begins as a Ted Talk about the marginalization of clowns in society and ends with a pie in the face. Not laugh-out-loud funny, but definitely smile-worthy.

Three Drops of Blood

I really like this show. Playwright Jennifer Giesbrecht manages to paint a lovely picture of friendship set in a world on the brink of being over-run by zombies. The writing is sophisticated. There seems to be a clear, creative directorial vision. The actors have talent and chemistry. A stronger ending, with more gore (a requisite in my mind in a zombie apocalypse) would have pushed this into four-star territory. Still, a fringe must-see!
