From Silicon Valley to Silicon Hali

The 10 best riffs on the iconic tech name

James White

Anchored by the likes of Apple and Google, the collection of tech companies based around San Jose, California deserves its reputation for fostering innovation and success. Silicon Valley is such a powerhouse that even the idea of naming a clump of businesses Silicon Something has swept the globe. While stealing another place’s name usually doesn’t earn you high marks for innovative thinking, there are variations on the theme that take the original and improve on it, much as Apple itself does. Here are the best.

Cyberabad (Hyderabad, India)

Silicon Alley (New York City, New York)

Dot Commonwealth (Massachusetts, officially the Commonwealth of Massachusetts)

Silicorn Valley (Fairfield, Iowa)

Media Del Rey (Marina Del Rey, California)

Silicon Valley Forge (Valley Forge, Pennsylvania)

Intelligent Island (Singapore, China)

SIlicon Hali (Halifax, Canada)

Billy-can Valley (Arnhem Land, Australia)

Silicone Valley (for porn rather than tech, Los Angeles, California)
