It all started when Michelle Kulyk, the Centre for Arts and Technology's head of the fashion design and merchandising department, attended last year's Atlantic Eco Expo. While she was really impressed with the event, she saw room for improvement when it came to the fashion portion. Kulyk envisioned a collaboration, and had her students in mind. After hitting a few speed bumps (Eco Expo announced it wouldn't go on this year) Kulyk and her students planned their own sustainable fashion show. The ecLoTHES' website boasts the slogan "desirable, sustainable, available" and it couldn't ring more true for Kulyk. "We want people to start thinking about their's all about fashionable clothing, and clothing people can see themselves wearing. The mindset is that sustainable is not fashionable." The event will kick off with a trunk show of local vendors (4:30-7pm), followed by runway action (7-9pm) and then more shopping, and a chance to see the items off the runway up close and personal. Preloved, Orphanage Clothing, Paper People, Meversible WE3 and Dakini Silks are just a few of the designers whose clothing will hit the all-Canadian, all-sustainable cat walk at this student-driven event, which Kulyk hopes will become an annual one. "We want to send a message to retailers in town that consumers want these products."
