Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova
This is how dope the songs from the terrific film Once are: they’re number one in soundtracks at iTunes, besting even Hannah Montana and High School Musical. Though some of the tracks are available rock-like on The Cost, the latest from Hansard’s band The Frames, and in delicate piano form on the Hansard/Irglova duet record The Swell Season, if the first you’ve heard of them is in the movie, then this is your album. Irglova’s surprisingly forceful solo turns on “If You Want Me” and “The Hill” hit harder in sequence, and fun bits like Hansard’s improvised bus sing-along “Broken-Hearted Hoover-Fixer Sucker Guy” recall the film at its most glorious. Top shelf stuff, ’tis.
