Gretchen Wilson
All Jacked Up
Sony
Playing the girl who’ll defend her own honour, Wilson has captured mainstream country’s heart and figures to hold onto it. In Gretchen’s world, chewing tobacco is an aphrodisiac (“Skoal Ring”), alcohol improves awareness (“One Bud Wiser”), and Paris Hilton is cruisin’ for a bruisin’ (“California Girls”). Though these views are debatable, her forceful nature backed by screeching fiddle state each case admirably. “Political-ly Uncorrect” features a cameo by Merle Haggard that lifts a routine holler for flag, Bible and working man into an unforgettable moment. The song kicks ass, but an outsider may feel it promotes fuzzy thinking on election day. Like Loretta Lynn in the ’60s, Wilson is more a character than a singe. Like America today, she’s all about the attitude.
